THE PROBLEM
The Masseter muscle controls chewing and the raising of your jawbone. But when it’s in a constant state of tension, you may spend many mornings waking up to headaches, jaw pains, and (eventually) damaged teeth, none of which are a particularly good time. Masseter Jaw (Bruxism) or teeth grinding have options meant to help release tension in your facial muscles, but they are no match for a longtime habit.
THE BOTOX TREATMENT
By injecting small doses of botulinum toxin directly into the masseter muscle (the large muscle that moves the jaw), the muscle is weakened enough to stop involuntary grinding of the teeth and clenching of the jaw. This significantly relaxes the muscle and reduces the wear and tear on the teeth due to grinding. The treatment takes about 15 minutes and the pain is minimal with a small ‘bee-sting’ like swelling subsiding within minutes. Within 36-48 hours the treatment starts to work, with full results becoming apparent after about 2 weeks.
